MATT

“Hey,” Paige says, eyes glued to the TV as I close the front door behind me. “How was work? Find any new groupies today?”

A warmth runs through my chest, and I can’t help but smile. I love having someone here to ask me about my day, and more specifically, I love that it’s Paige I’m coming home to. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment, but I can’t help it.

Whether we’re teasing each other, making the other a cup of coffee, or mindlessly chatting about our days, I’ve gotten used to having her here. She might not want to date me, but at least we enjoy each other's company.

It’s gonna be really hard when she leaves, but I try not to think about that. My brain doesn’t want to acknowledge the fact that she won’t be here when summer’s over—not yet, anyway.

“It was great. No new groupies. It was a slow afternoon,” I say bluntly, noting her sarcastic nod. She’s wearing tight black biker shorts with an oversized light-blue T-shirt on top, and I know she’s probably trying to be comfy, but she’s also so incredibly sexy it hurts.

I toss my keys on the kitchen table, grab a beer from the fridge, and then find a spot to sit right next to her on the couch, bypassing my chair altogether.

“How was your day?” I ask, a level of comfort settling between us that I’ve come to crave.

“It was good!” She doesn’t take her eyes off Wheel of Fortune but continues talking. “Mia and I went to the beach to relax and stopped at Marty’s to say hi. It was freaking hot, though. We both had enough sun for the day, so we went our separate ways to relax in the air conditioning.” She gestures at the TV. “You’re looking at my evening right here.”

“Wheel of Fortune, huh? I’m more of a Price is Right kinda guy.”

“Really?” She laughs. “I figured this would be right up your alley with words and all, Mr. Big-Shot Scrabble Guy.”

“I am actually surprisingly good at Scrabble,” I say in a monotone voice, fully acknowledging that it comes as a shock that I’m great with words. “I’m smarter than you think. I’m not just a pretty face, sweetheart.”

“Didn’t think you were, don’t worry.” She presses pause on the remote and stands up. “I’m gonna grab a snack. You want something?”

I shrug. “Chips and salsa?” I throw a wink her way, wondering if she’ll remember our drunken late-night snack—and then the kiss that came after that snack.

“How about some homemade ice cream that your mommy made you?” Her words bring me right back down to reality.

She grabs the container of vanilla ice cream out of the freezer and scoops some into two bowls. She takes the sprinkles out of the drawer and shakes some onto each, then slides a spoon into each bowl.

“What if I didn’t want sprinkles?” I eye the multi-colored bits of candy that are completely covering the ice cream she just handed me. “A little
