âHey,â Paige says, eyes glued to the TV as I close the front door behind me. âHow was work? Find any new groupies today?â
A warmth runs through my chest, and I canât help but smile. I love having someone here to ask me about my day, and more specifically, I love that itâs Paige Iâm coming home to. Maybe Iâm a glutton for punishment, but I canât help it.
Whether weâre teasing each other, making the other a cup of coffee, or mindlessly chatting about our days, Iâve gotten used to having her here. She might not want to date me, but at least we enjoy each other's company.
Itâs gonna be really hard when she leaves, but I try not to think about that. My brain doesnât want to acknowledge the fact that she wonât be here when summerâs overânot yet, anyway.
âIt was great. No new groupies. It was a slow afternoon,â I say bluntly, noting her sarcastic nod. Sheâs wearing tight black biker shorts with an oversized light-blue T-shirt on top, and I know sheâs probably trying to be comfy, but sheâs also so incredibly sexy it hurts.
I toss my keys on the kitchen table, grab a beer from the fridge, and then find a spot to sit right next to her on the couch, bypassing my chair altogether.
âHow was your day?â I ask, a level of comfort settling between us that Iâve come to crave.
âIt was good!â She doesnât take her eyes off Wheel of Fortune but continues talking. âMia and I went to the beach to relax and stopped at Martyâs to say hi. It was freaking hot, though. We both had enough sun for the day, so we went our separate ways to relax in the air conditioning.â She gestures at the TV. âYouâre looking at my evening right here.â
âWheel of Fortune, huh? Iâm more of a Price is Right kinda guy.â
âReally?â She laughs. âI figured this would be right up your alley with words and all, Mr. Big-Shot Scrabble Guy.â
âI am actually surprisingly good at Scrabble,â I say in a monotone voice, fully acknowledging that it comes as a shock that Iâm great with words. âIâm smarter than you think. Iâm not just a pretty face, sweetheart.â
âDidnât think you were, donât worry.â She presses pause on the remote and stands up. âIâm gonna grab a snack. You want something?â
I shrug. âChips and salsa?â I throw a wink her way, wondering if sheâll remember our drunken late-night snackâand then the kiss that came after that snack.
âHow about some homemade ice cream that your mommy made you?â Her words bring me right back down to reality.
She grabs the container of vanilla ice cream out of the freezer and scoops some into two bowls. She takes the sprinkles out of the drawer and shakes some onto each, then slides a spoon into each bowl.
âWhat if I didnât want sprinkles?â I eye the multi-colored bits of candy that are completely covering the ice cream she just handed me. âA little
